Five Reasons I Prefer Cats

Here’s something my regular readers know right off the bat.
Or….right off the cat?
Did I just invent that?
I prefer cats to people.
Well, most people.
I do have friends I like.
There is also someone special in my life (the details of which I’m keeping to myself) that I do care about, and she me.
For the most part, I prefer cats to people.
Want to know why?
Of course you do.
Here are my five reasons why.
- Cats are great for a work from home career. I WFH 4 days a week now, and I FUCKING LOVE IT. I can wake up, eat breakfast, do my morning routine, meditate, and sign in and off I go. No commute, no traffic, NOTHING. It’s amazing. Cats are WONDERFUL WFH companions. They sleep all day, and when they want attention, or to say a quick hello, they know to show up at just the right time for me to take a quick break from staring at my screens all day. So, if you WFH, get a cat! Get two!
- Cats are neat. Well, most of the time. I am a neat freak. I clean every morning, and still use my grandmother's 1968 Electrolux. Fuck off, Dyson. Cats appreciate neatness and order in their lives. They clean themselves, and rarely if ever make a mess. Well, except for the litter box, and Mona is a bit of a slob with her dry food. But I digress, when I go upstairs and see what an absolute slob their loveable Pit Bull Apollo is, I am grateful for my cats.
- They’re the least judgmental creatures on the planet. OK, dogs are too, but cats invented the term non-judgmental. It really does not matter what the fuck is going on in your life, as long as you are there for them, they will be there for you. You can gain weight, lose weight, get fired, get dumped, get cheated on (I can vouch for that last one) be single for years, cats DO NOT judge. To them, you’re perfect just the way you are. Every day, no matter what. They love you inside and out. I wonder if Mister Rogers was a cat person?
- Cats are amazing to meditate with. I meditate twice a day. In the morning, and right before I go to sleep. I STRONGLY suggest you take it up. Even just the breathing exercises go a long way toward calming my brain, centering me, and helping with my focus and state of mind. Plenty of free options are available, although I am a fan of Apple Fitness and Calm.com’s meditations. Even if you don’t want to meditate, just having a cat sleeping on your lap, warm, toasty, snuggly, while you relax with your favorite shows or even some tunes, puts your mind and body in a MUCH better place. I have the privilege of living with four lap cats. Even Queen Sophie will sometimes honor my lap with a snooze. When she does, I am never more relaxed or at peace with the world. When I meditate, Vance tends to lay on my chest and pass out. Nothing better in the world, trust me on that!
- Cats love UNCONDITIONALLY. This is what I love most about cats, even if it goes along with the non-judgmental thing. The term unconditional love tends to get thrown around a lot, doesn’t it? I thought my ex did, but I was wrong. I thought the people I once referred to as my parents would, but I was wrong. When cats love, they love unconditionally. Be good to a cat, earn their trust, their love, and that is something that can NEVER be lost. No matter what. NEVER. When I see Vance, curled up on my lap, asleep, cozy, warm, knowing he is loved, purring away, that is a love, a bond, that can never be broken. There is no love on this earth like the love a cat gives you. It is that unconditional love from Tucker that literally saved my life. Quite literally, without his love, I would have killed myself and not been here today to ramble about cats on medium.
